Our first stop was a zodiac cruise around Prince Olav Harbor, home of the long abandoned whaling station. As it is contaminated by asbestos we had to keep 200 meters (220 yards) from shore so no landing was possible.

Salisbury Plain was the highlight of our trip so far. We booked the Photography Adventure which gave us along with 7 other passengers 45 minutes on land with the ship’s professional photographer before the rest of the passengers arrived. Amongst the hundreds of thousands of King Penguins there were lots and lots of fur seals on the beach which can be quite problematic. Members of the expedition team, armed with big sticks, were interspersed along the beach and guided us safely through the territory.

Seals have right-of-way

We were warned not to get to close to seals, not to get between two moving animals, not to look them in the eye, and under no circumstances try to pet them or get down on the ground. Here are a few impressions from this fantastic outing.
